Configure sea routes

To calculate activity distance for sea freight, we use our internal routing engine to determine the most likely route. Based on the origin and destination provided by user, we determine their coordinates and determine the route. Based on this route, we also determine the respective trade-lane, to calculate emissions using the relevant tradelane factor.

Companies sometimes opt to avoid major canals, such as the Suez Canal or Panama Canal, though it’s not a frequent or consistent decision. Avoiding these canals is usually influenced by specific situational factors, like the Suez canal blockade or the instability surrounding the red sea region. With this update, users can flexibly apply settings via the logistiics profile, helping calculate emissions more accurately for specific uploads

When to use it

Unless you have specific requirements, it is recommended to leave the default settings as is. Use the settings when you are sure that for a period for a time, a certain canal was not used for transporting your freight. E.g. the Suez canal during the Suez canal blockade of 2021.

How to use it

1. Go to Logistics profile you want to adjust, and navigate to the Geo-tab.

2. Click on "Customize sea routing options"

3. Select which canals you want to avoid.

4. Click to save the selection and Save the Logistics profile again.

5. New uploads will use these new settings for the calculations.

Note: If you want the settings to apply for a specific period, make sure you adjust the input file data to reflect only the shipments you want have these settings applied to.
